IDEA Versions and Compatible Laptop Specifications

Hello,

How many different kinds of IDEA license are there?
- Client Version
- Server Version
- Single User Version
- Shared User Version

I am purchasing new laptops to run IDEA on standalone mode (Client Version).
What is the recommended laptop specification?

Thanks and Regards!

Hello,

To add on, my data has close to 10 million records and I frequently use Join, Visual Connector and Summarization functions in IDEA.
What will be the recommended laptop specification then?

Thanks and Regards!

Well it is usually the best you can afford as IDEA uses most of the computer.  So a higher end processor is recommended.  I have an i7, probably want 16 gigs of memory but with your file size you would probably want at least 8 gigs.  Also as IDEA is disk intensive hard disk speed is important, an SSD drive is probably your prefered and with those file size you might want to get at 512 megs, the more is better.  But the regular hard drives are still ok if you can't afford it to upgrade to an SSD.

So first thing is to get the best processor and most memory for the computer.  If you still can afford it then the best hard drives like an SSD.  Video isn't really important compared to the rest.

I recently upgrade my laptop to this: https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834234654 (I got it on special :-) )  and so far it works great.

Hello Brian,

Thanks for your advice. I am thinking of the following laptop specifications:

  • Intel Core i7
  • >= 16 GB RAM DDR4
  •  >= 512GB SSD
    • Any comments on using SSD or SSHD?

By the way, do you happen to know if IDEA run on multi-threads?

Thanks and Regards!

Those specs should be good.  SSD from what I understand is faster than an SSHD but more expensive.  So if you can afford it an SSD would be better just make sure you get one large enough to handle your files size.

I don't think it runs in a multi-thread environment.

The server version would only run on a server so you couldn't use it on your laptop.  The one you would mostly have would be a single user version or a client version if you are in a corporate environment.
