IDEA seems to freeze up when opening a dialog

This can happen if you open a dialog and IDEA appears to freeze up.  This will usually happen if you usually use two monitors and then detach one of them and only use one monitor.  The problem is not that IDEA is locking up but the problem is that IDEA has opened the dialog in the monitor that is no longer attached to the computer so you can no longer see the dialog.  How to get the dialog back, you must first hit Alt + Space at the same time, then hit M (l if you are using the French version of IDEA) and then you can use the cursor keys to move your dialog back onto the screen attached to your computer

Another option is to attach a second screen to your computer and then move it over a screen, but this is not always an option.

Hi Brian,
What do you mean by a dialog?  This may have happened to me before when I hit the equation editor button while doing an extraction.  Does equation editor button = dialog?  From what I recall, attaching a monitor did not help for me and I had to re-install IDEA.  Thanks.

Yes the equation editor would be a dialog, or the summarization menu, stratification, etc.  I have seen this happen to myself or when I have given training where someone might have a laptop and they have an extra monitor that they use at their desk.  They would move the equation editor to the second monitor while IDEA is in the first, if you detach the laptop from the second monitor IDEA (or other windows products) will remember that it is in the second monitor and when you open it again it will be placed in the second monitor even if it is not attached.  IDEA appears to lock up but it is just because you are not seeing the dialog and have to move it to the single screen.  Uninstalling it and reinstalling it will fix the problem but you should try the above key commands to see if you can move it to the single screen.

genius! I was trying to move the window, which did not work at first. then reading your solution I tried it again, cuz I was sure it would work. Without you, Brian, I would have given up on this, not believing it would work in this case.thank you!
